How to configure IMAP mail service on Outlook for Google Apps Mail
If you only use Microsoft Outlook for emailing, it may not necessary to install Google Apps Sync. Or maybe your system does not meet the minimum requirement of installing Google Apps Sync, and before you upgrade your system, you would like to be able to check emails on Outlook. Here is how to configure IMAP email account on your Outlook (using 2007 version for illustration purpose).
1. First of all, you need to email IMAP for your Google Mail account. To do this, log into your Google Apps mail account, and click on setting. Under Forwarding and POP/IMAP, tick “Enable IMAP”, and click “Save Changes”.
2. Open Outlook, go to Tools->Email accounts, click add new account.
3. On the next screen, enter Your Name, your full email address as This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it , and password. Tick Manually configure server settings or additional server types, and click Next
4. Select Internet Email
5. On the next screen, configure settings as below:
- Your Name
- Your full name address including domain, i.e. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
- Set account type as IMAP
- Incoming mail server is imap.gmail.com, outgoing mail server is smtp.gmail.com
- Enter your full email address as User Name, and enter your password, and click next to finish the set up.
6. Go to Tools, select Options then choose Mail Setup, under Email Accounts, click on the account you have just set up, and click Change above the list of account, then click on More Settings.
7. On the Advanced tab of the new popped window. Set the Incoming Server port number as 993, and Outgoing Server port number as 587.
8. Click on the Outgoing Server tab, make sure that the “my outgoing server (IMAP) requires authentication” is checked, and select Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
9. Click OK, and start using Outlook for emailing.
